Communication
Strategies

by Gwendolyn de Geest RN, BSN, MA

This volume of CruiseRespite Solutions has been about embracing the here and now, as we learn different communication strategies in caring for our loved one with dementia.

“Let me tell you how come I am so short,” says Maggie. “When I was a little girl I had to deliver the milk for my Gramma. I had to carry six pails of milk on each arm. And this is why I am so short today.”

This story is an example of how spontaneous the communication can be with a person with dementia. If we listen carefully, we can hear some wonderful stories.

As family caregivers are discovering, the communication process with their loved one with dementia is totally different now. In fact, caregivers are discovering that it is themselves who indeed have to change. In entering the reality of the person with dementia, this sometimes means that their inner world of dementia causes them to communicate in a very strange manner.

However, remember that emotions behind failing words may be far more important than the words themselves. Look beyond the Alzheimer disease and focus on the person who loves you and needs you.
