Theme:
Implementing Change in a Specal Care Unit Environment
- a practical guide to transformation
Presented by Gwendolyn de Geest, RN BSN MA
Overview:
In In dementia care, we are undergoing the task of cultural transformation. In order for a home to be
a nice place to live, it must also be a nice place to work. Studies have shown that one of the best
treatments for persons with dementia lies in the environment; it should be neither over
stimulating, nor understimulating. This session will illustrate a Model of Care that modifies
the environment for persons with dementia and also for the staff working there. This Model of
Care will illustrate that person-centered care is not something we do, but something we feel.
Learning Outcomes:
- Introduce the Person-Centered Environment Model
- Identify obstacles to embracing this model
- Analyze the steps to achieving the Person-Centered Environment Model
